"The overall resort was beautiful and true to its pictures. The staff was friendly and the service was excellent! The view from our balcony was spectacular and the resort was exceptionally clean. The beach was disappointing in that there wasn’t much room for laying out. When the tide was high, it would wash up most of the area. If you didn’t get out first thing in the morning, you were not able to get a spot for soaking up the sun. The website is unclear regarding the type of food served. We were looking forward to excellent Mexican and seafood and we were very disappointed, the food was Americanized and not authentic. The website doesn’t explain that you have to make reservations ahead of time to eat in the restaurants! That was very frustrating as you pay a lot of money to go to an all-inclusive and then they place restrictions on when you can eat at the specialty spots."

"We had issues at the resort. We had two ajoining rooms with our kids and the air-conditioning did not work right in our room. It was so hot the first night. I could not sleep and the pillows smelled like mildew. We contacted the front desk and they put us off until the next day. The mini fridge was dead and the motor to our air-conditioner was out. The maintinance man said the building was old and things were just worn out. He was supposed to retun the next morning and never did. It was miserably hot. If you opened the patio door the air turned off and every time the maid service came they would shut it off. They also would not replace the towels. The elevators had no air either nor did the hallways (or lights). I tried to find a contact to tell them these things when I returned and can find a customer service option nowhere. The food was good, but a lot of restrictions. The pictures look great, but everything is plaster and wood with faux painting to make it look like stone. The ceilings all dripped and had water damage. It really was a 3-star hotel in disguise. No room service either. Would not go back." – Jeanna from Dallas, Texas
"There was a large group of us that stayed at the Riu Cancun for my 35th Birthday. I was not impressed. I have stayed at other Riu’s that were much better! The staff at the front desk weren’t friendly or helpful. The second day that we were there, I noticed that a couple of my shirts had disappeared and my brand new lotion that was sitting in my suitcase had been opened and used. When I approached the front desk about the situation, they sent one of their “Security guards” up to my room to go through my suitcases to apparently see if I was lying?? A couple days go by and nothing. I was finally fed up and went to talk to the main manager. She said, let me look into this and get back to you. Another day went by and she said that she found my shirts and that the maid said that they were actually mixed up with the sheets when she changed them. I then explained that my clothes were no where near the bed and that still didn’t explain the whole lotion thing. I was happy to get my shirts back and left it alone. The rest of the trip, I only let them clean my room when I was in there to make sure nothing was taken. Come to find out after we all got home…I was missing hair accessories, one of my husbands shirts was gone and my fathers pocket knife was gone. I will never stay there again!" – Amber from Salt Lake City, Utah
"After reading so many negative reviews I was nervous to say the least. However when we arrived we were pleasantly surprised. The staff was more than friendly and accommodating. Our room was ready before 12pm (a surprise we were not expecting). The room was lovley and stocked appropriately. Food … a wide array for even the pickiest eater. The only complaint I may have is the bed was hard and the pillows were flat. The rooms also need additional electrical outlets. Other than that I would go again without question." – Sharonne from New York City, N.Y.
"Heaven? Almost……! I am amazed at the negative reviews. What on Earth are people thinking or expecting that the Riu Cancun did not provide. There was a kind and attentive staff, from check-in clerks to bell boys to house keepers. They provided clean and comfortable surroundings. From the front-desk to the restaurants, to the outside ground, the pools and rooms, all spotless. We always felt safe and secure. The food was excellent; the Don Juan Buffet was great for breakfast and lunch and dinner and excellent service was the theme of the day. There was good entertainment, beautiful pools, effort free check-in and service second to none. The children’s program was amazing; pool side activities were fun and inviting and the evening shows were entertaining. Not Vegas, but very well done. Special thanks to the activities staff; Latcho, Fernando, Sara, and Froggy who worked pool side daily and during the evening shows to keep us laughing and entertained all week. Thanks too, to the hard working ground keepers and cleaning staff and table servers who never stopped working and with a smile to keep the place spotless and everyone well served. Never once did I feel as they expected a tip but we did give tips because they earned it. And every time they were very gracious in receiving the gift. There are lot of shopping, restaurants and cool bars within walking distance of the hotel. Have I described Heaven? Of course not, there are flaws in everything, but not many at the Riu Cancun. One of the highlights of the trip was meeting so many wonderful people from countries around the world. Cancun is truly a world destination. Will we go back? Tomorrow if we could. Take my word for it, go-relax!. Enjoy..and have the time of your life. The negative reviews, I don’t get it. But I guess you can’t satisfy everyone. Even in Heaven. Ha! Enjoy the Riu Cancun. We sure did!!" – Michael from Cincinnati, Ohio
"We went the week of New Years. We had never been to Mexico before.. it was amazing! The hotel was perfect. It was close to Starbucks and shopping. The clubs were right down the street from the hotel too. The only complaint I have is the fact that you have to get up early (6am) to get a spot at the pool. People start putting their towels on the chairs at the crack of dawn. Other than that.. it was truly the best vacation weve taken!" – P.J. from Boston, Massachusetts
"My husband and I decided to go to Cancun for our 1st anniversary. I’d never been there before but he has. We were so impressed with RIU Cancun that we cant wait to come back next year! We loved the beach with the rocks. It was so beautiful and compared to the east side of Cancun’s beach… WOW! We loved the fact to that there was a professional photographer! From the time we walked in the door we were greeted so warmly. The food was fantastic! Our room was perfect and so was the maid service! The pools were neat and clean! And like I said already, we can’t wait til next year to return!" – Bruce from Mitchell, South Dakota
"The hotel is nice and massive. The food is very good and abundant, but that is where it ends. A few of people arrived at 12pm and the room wasn’t ready they said come back in 1 hour and we all did. After 3 hours miraculously everybody’s room was ready at the same time and then you are on your own to find your room. I didn’t see a bellboy and neither did anyone else. There is no room service and no coffee pot in the rooms. You are very much on your own there. The pool service at the pool was terrible and worse on the beach and the bartenders weren’t very friendly. Don’t believe the pictures of the beach you see online, it looks nothing like that. There are better resorts in Cancun that will pamper you more, but if you don’t mind doing things for yourself it is a nice place. Another thing is the sun goes behind the tallest building around 2:00 which casts shade on the pools. I hope this helps you with your choice of resorts." – Randall from Woodruff, Illinois
