More and more travelers are looking for destinations that are off the beaten path – and Tbilisi City in the country of Georgia has certainly captured their attention. With a beautifully preserved Old Town and scenic streets, the Georgian capital city of Tbilisi has a lot to offer.

In this interesting destination you’ll find eclectic art, futuristic architecture, modern travelers, inspiring people, parks, funky coffee shops and much more. It’s truly an amazing place, especially considering the fact that everyone still thinks it’s a grayish, Soviet Era city.

Fortunately, it will surprise you with it’s wonders. However, travelers who have been in Tbilisi always talk about two things: the amount of things to do and the delicious food.

Things That You Can Do In Georgia

Even though some people think that it hasn’t developed much further from the old, Soviet era design and ways, Tbilisi is surprisingly modern and has a lot to offer to any modern traveler. People praise the beauty of the streets and the old town while enjoying the company of interesting people in fun cafes across town.

Here are some of the most popular things to do in Tbilisi:

Old Town Tbilisi

Old Town Tbilisi
“This is one of the most prominent attractions in all of Tbilisi. With old churches, monuments and fortresses all wrapped up in a maze of narrow cobblestone streets, it will amaze you with every twist and turn. It was made for exploring and walking without a strategy or a map. In this lovely place, you’ll never be sure exactly where you are or where you’ll end up. You can stumble upon a wine bar or a bakery, even a khinkali shop. Wonders await at every corner”, – says hospitality writer Jonas Bledington of OriginWritings.

Abanotubani

Abanotubani District is also located in the Old Town and it’s a series of bathhouse steaming with sulfurous waters from hot springs sprinkled across the area. These bathhouses are located underground but at the street level you can see charming brick domes all hiding baths underneath. You have a wide variety of choices with this – you can use either communal or private baths and indulge yourself with a relaxing experience. Communal baths are cheaper but if you want some privacy, you can always choose a private bath. You can soak in the hot water, visit the sauna and then swim in the cold pool, as recommended by health experts.

Tbilisi Cable Car

Tbilisi Cable car will offer an amazing experience to anyone who loves sightseeing and panoramic views of the town. It provides you with a short but lovely ride where you’ll be able to see the old town, Mtkvari River, Rike Park, Narikala Fortress and so on. You’ll also be in a very close proximity of the wonderful statue of Mother Georgia. Another thing you’ll be able to see is the imposing National Botanical Garden.

Tbilisoba

If you ever visit Tbilisi in October – which you should, the Fall is the perfect time to visit this destination – you can attend the annual festival of Tbilisoba. It’s celebrated since 1979 and it provides both the locals and the tourists with incredibly good time. The whole city is in a good mood, hosting concerts, cultural events, flea markets, wine and food stalls and a lot of dancing.

Georgian Wine and Dine Tour

“Georgia has been famous for its wine for 8000 years and this is why this tour offers you a unique take on ancient traditions with delicious food and engaging stories of wine and food”, – says Nicki Justin, a travel blogger from Writemyx.

Museums

The city’s museums offer a great take on the country’s history. The Georgian National Museum has a detailed exhibit, the Nikoloz Baratashvili Memorial House Museum has materials from the romantic poet’s life and work, as well as period furniture, instruments, paintings and much more. The David Baazov Museum shares stories on Jewish history in Georgia and you can truly learn a lot.

National Botanic Garden

This is a gigantic botanical garden which features waterfalls, rivers, hiking paths, flowers and so on. When you find yourself here, you have trouble remembering that you are in a vibrant city and you feel more like you are in a quiet village.

Narikala Fortress

Tbilisi Narikala Fortress
The imposing Narikala fortress dominates the skyline with its great history and stories of old times. These ruins offer the best views of the city and you can see for miles and miles.

Delicious Georgian Food

Georgia has one of the best national cuisines in the world, consisting mostly of fruit, vegetables and bread. Here are some of its most authentic dishes.

Khachapuri Adjaruli

This is one of the most popular dishes in Georgia – it’s beat garnished with cheese, butter and a raw egg at the top. Once they serve you with this dish, you have to swirl to mix all of the ingredients together and then take chunks of the bread, dip them in and eat.

Churchkhela

While this dish may seem like a decoration of some sort, it’s really not. This is a strand of walnuts carefully poured over with grape juice, left to dry until a waxy exterior has built up.

Khinkali

This is a soup dumpling, a finger food in essence, filled with various fillings – vegetables, meat, cheese and so on.

While these three are a must-try, here are some more dishes you should eat:

  • Ajapsandali
  • Lobio
  • Mtsvadi
  • Tklapi
  • Kharcho
  • Lobiani
