Barcelo Maya Tropical Reviews
The Barcelo Maya Tropical Beach is the sister hotel of the Barcelo Colonial and the newest of the 5 hotel properties in the Barcelo all-inclusive resort complex. It’s tropical open air Mexican style architecture blends nicely as a beach resort. The hotel is built in the Barcelo hotel complex just north of Xcaret and on a mile long stretch of white sand beach. Lounge by one of the three large pools or enjoy an afternoon under one of the many palm trees shading the beach. The Barcelo Tropical Beach Resort is usually priced reasonable for such a fine quality all-inclusive resort.
This resort is all-inclusive which means all meals/snacks, unlimited domestic drinks until 2:00 am, six restaurants, six bars, 24 hour room service (fee), nightly entertainment, three swimming pools, gym, spa (fee), non-motorized water sports and six tennis courts.
286 Deluxe Bunaglows, A/C, 2 doubles or 1 king bed, 3 Pools, Children’s Pool, 6 Restaurants, 4 Bars, 2 Swim-up bars, Adults-Only Jacuzzi, Pool grill, 7 Tennis Courts, Complete Resort Day Spa, Fully Equipped Fitness Center, Activities program, Water-sports, Golf nearby.
"This review will be truthful and honest, so if you don’t want to hear about the nightmares of the Barcelo then quit reading now. Day 1… not terrible, arrival at airport and customs clearance was painless. Check-in at hotel wasn’t bad…then stood in line for an hour to meet with the lady in charge of arranging our “fancy sit down” meals for the week. She then informed us that the only times available were either at 5pm or at 9pm. No reservations were made for night #1 so we decided on the buffet. GROSS…nothing was hot and nothing was cold. I understand that food from another country should taste different, but this wasn’t different. Day 2….Woke up to kids using the staircase outside our bedroom door as a jungle gym. Went to the beach, “red flag” out indicating that the water is too rough for swimming due to the high winds. Lunch…back to the snack buffet. Once again no hot food and no cold food, everything was just room temp. Dinner at the seafood restaurant. Food had a good taste but a totally different effect…everyone who ate the lobster soup (myself included) ended up vomiting with diarrhea for the next two days. Clean bedding was not to be found during this traumatic event. 5-hours of phone calls to housekeeping without help resulted in a call to management, who finally got the ball rolling. Two days of being sick takes us to Day 4. Off resort all day for zip lines and cave swimming….OUTSTANDING!!! Day 5. Beach all day under “red flag” conditions again. Much windier today, wind and waves smell of sewage. Dinner and the Japanese restaurant was excellent. Great food and great entertainment. Think twice before committing to the barcelo! If a language barrier is a problem or if you don’t mind sleeping on a bed that resembles what Fred Flinstone slept on, I suggest you look else where. Take it for what its worth…this was not our first trip out of the country, and never in my life have I wasted time complaining like this. I’m just trying to save anyone who works hard for their money the disappointment we experienced." – Ken from Stevens Point, Wisconsin
"We just returned from the Barcelo Maya Tropical. We loved it. It is just gorgeous. Every where you look there is something beautiful to see! The lobby, the grounds, fountains, the main covered corridors, everything is a feast for the eyes! The restaurants were amazing, the themes very well portrayed in the menus as well as decor and staff costuming, (Japanese, Spanish, Mexican, etc.) The buffet was excellent and the “snack bar” is amazing. Just leave the lounge chair, throw on your flipflops and coverup have a great meal, then head back to the sun and surf! Hammocks everywhere, bliss….( our bed was hard, only complaint) Cannot wait to return-if I could blink and be anywhwere, right now- it would be there!!!" – Pam from Calgary, Alberta, Canada
"Both check in and check out were painless. We stayed at the Tropical resort and we were in a club premium package room. Our room was neat and clean each day and the air conditioner worked perfectly. There seems to be a shortage of wash cloths at the resort so there are days you do not have one in your room and you will have to ask. On the club premium package you can eat at a specialty restaurant every night if you choose. We ate at the steak house which is very good, I suggest the short ribs or the beef tenderloin. The Italian restaurant was not my favorite, but it was ok. The seafood restaurant was very good, and the Tepenyaki restaurant was my favorite, also very good. The buffet was also very good. The grille by the pool was good as well. The grounds along with the pools, and beaches are breath taking. Things I did not like at this resort; The beds are very hard, ask for a mattress topper when you get there, and if possible bring your pillow from home. The bar staff is a bit slow at the pools. The internet service in your room is very slow. Remember that you will always be told 15 minutes when they really mean 2 hours. I loved this resort and will return in May. I will ask for the 3rd floor instead of the second for a better view. I used Olympus as my transportation company to and from the airport, they were fantastic. The Cancun airport is a bit of a mess to traverse through Olympus makes it easy. Just look for their bright orange shirts that say Olympus." – Corie from Auburn, California
"Barcelo Tropical Resort was amazing to say the least. Our group consisted of 29 people. From toddler to my grandparents. The resort was so clean and well kept. We always seen people cleaning. They have lots of variety for eating options. You can’t go hungry. From the sit down restaurants (Oriental was my favorite) to the buffets. It was all wonderful. The pools were very large and very clean with a seperate area just for the kids. The beach itself was gorgeous. White sand beaches, with shining blue water. I love this resort so much, my finance and I are getting married there on 1.22.2011. If you have not been there, i strongly suggest that you venture that way! You won’t regret it!" – Shantell from Waconia, Minnesota
