"Solymar Resort - Fallen light fixture and broken toilet." - Libby from Dickinson, North Dakota
Remarks:
"Rooms, Service and Food were terrible. Could not stand to even eat the food. The service was really bad. They were not helpful and very rude. Room cleanliness was bad. We went without a working toilet for the whole 6 days we stayed there. Our light fixture even fell from the ceiling during our stay and it was never fixed." - Libby from Dickinson, North Dakota

"We stayed at a condo in this resort. The rooms were nice but the problem is they are in the Horrible Resort building. I feel sorry for the condo owners because they can clean up their rooms all they want but the rooms are still in the horrible Solymar Resort. If you use the pool you will be lucky to find a lounge chair, very few available and they have wooden ones with no pads. Forget trying to get a lounge chair on the beach if you are staying in a condo or the hotel. I am surprised that this resort is still in business when much nicer properties close-by are shut down. If I was a condo owner here I would sell it if you can and look somewhere else. Don't stay here, anywhere else is nicer."

"Can I give it zero stars??? I just returned from the Solymar and will absolutely never return again! It was awful. When we first arrived our room was in a basement, had no dead-bolt on the door and was completely nasty. We complained and got a different room, but it was just as bad. The service was horrible. It took ten minutes to get a cup of water and even longer to get a drink. There were only two bars and one was only open for a few hours a day. The swim-up bar was not open the entire week. Also, there was only one bartender at each bar and they spoke little to no English. They did not let you have more than one drink at a time even if you were bringing it to your friend on the beach. One day they ran out of tequila, beer, rum, and vodka!!! All-inclusive, yeah right! There was also only one restaurant, it had bad hours of operation, terrible service, and the food was completely un-edible! The only thing we ate the whole week was buttered rolls. We had to leave the resort to eat or have any fun. Never stay here, ever. Mexico was wonderful (outside of this dump)!"

"I am a 21-year-old college student and I traveled to the Solymar with my group for spring break of 2011. This is by far the worst hotel I have ever stayed at. To begin the staff is extremely rude and is always asking for tips and only a handful could even speak a few words of English. The only employees that did their job were the cleaning crews, which were great minus the fact of not changing sheets or only fresh towels every couple of days. I bought all-inclusive and the food was of lower quality than dog food and made our entire group sick to the point by the week's end we had no choice but to go out and pay even more money to get an edible meal. Second the bottles at the bar were not even labeled and the beer warm. The worst part of the bar was the fact they would rinse out used plastic cups and serve them to others. This only contributed to the sickness. The rooms were average at best. You do not get what you pay for with this hotel even as a college student, especially since it is one of the furthest hotels from downtown Cancun. All in all if it were not for being a college kid looking for a good time this place would have ruined the entire trip."

"There wasn't anything good about this hotel. Our door didn't even open all the way, leaking plumbing, infested with ants, cigarette burns in our sheets, food smells and tastes like s#@x, sliding glass door doesn't lock, the front desk clerk doesn't pick up the phone (we caught her instant messaging her friends online instead), the staff doesn't speak any English, no travel agent on staff, didn't give us towels everyday, cleaned our room at 5:00pm, loose security (anyone can walk in), we didn't feel safe at all. There are nicer hotels on the strip that cost around the same price that I would HIGHLY recommend to stay at. My dad had to physically fix the internet because no one knew how to fix the damn thing. I dont want ANYONE to experience what my Dad and I went through. " - Taylor & Rick from Los Angeles, Calif.

"I would never stay here again, I went with my two children, we paid extra to go all-inclusive but ended up eating out every night because the food was so horrible. I was really sick for the first 4 days because the food was so bad. It really was awfull!!! The rooms were disgusting - we paid extra again to upgrade as the rooms they offered us were not even fit for a dog to live in!! It was so dissapointing because we had been saving up for our holiday for two years." - Emma from Gurnsey, The British Channel Islands

"Went to Cancun for the first time and had a wonderful time. Was treated like a queen and the rooms were nice and clean. The food was excellent. Nice and healthy choices. With all the activities and good food I actually lost weight. Had money for exchange right there at the resort. Would love to go back again to Soloymar. The beach was clean and welcoming. The bar and grill on the beach was great also. Thanks for all the fun." - Susan from Pocatello, Idaho

"Hotel Solymar is not all that! I really looked forward to gaining extra weight from the all-inclusive ammenities such as the food and bar, but I think I ended up losing a few lbs. I was there 6 days, and by Day #2, I was already sick and tired of the stewed beef (plus other same items)that appeared at every meal. I promise you that it seemed as if they recycled the food from one meal/day to the next. We ended up eating Pizza Hut and Dominoes a couple nights because we just couldnt get our fill from the constant mediocre buffet. The open bar was even worse! They served botton shelf liquor and charged $6.50 for the so-called premium brands (Suaza tequilla, Barcardi rum, etc). However, they did serve Dos XX beer on tap. I ended up purchasing a better brand of vodka and mixers from the local store. My room overlook the pool/beach area, which was beautiful. The rooms have terraces, but my sliding screen door was broken and off track. Their security system was the traditional key (not swipe card) lock, with no inside locks! There also didn't seem to be a manager on site." - Lawrence from Chicago,. Illinois

"This hotel is not a 4-star at all. I would give it a 2 at most. There are not 2 restaurants and the description is a lie. There is one restaurant with mediocre food and limited selection. There is one bar and the drinks are small in plastic cups with no pretty garnishes. The towels at the pool are hard to get and they make you get a card that allows you one towel. If you lose the card, they charge you $70. The rooms have no phones and they give you a small remote control tied to a string upon check in. That is weird. We ran out of soap, shampoo, kleenex that was never replenished when the maid came back. The front desk was uncooperative and rude. I left a drink in the lobby and much to my surprise, the drink was still there 2 days later. They do not care about the hotels appearance which is dissapointing to someone vacationing. I made sure I was taking tours everyday so I would not have to be there." - Amiee from Chicago, Illinois

"We will never stay at the Solymar again. The staff was not very accomadating. The rooms we had were by far not the cleanest. Our friends had maintainence problems and were assured someone would be by to correct the problem; they never came! Cigarette butts and small pieces of plastic were in the pool. Housekeeping threw away the bottles of water and our childrens sea shells. The phones did not work properly and had no instructions on them. No hot water. Poor communications because most of the staff spoke minimal english. The drinks, other than coke, ect. were horrible. We would have to rate this hotel as the worst we ever stayed in. On the up side...at the one restaurant the food was good and the restaurant staff was very friendly." - Jay and Vickie from Lebanon, Virginia

"My wife and I have stayed at the Solymar for about five years now. One half of the complex is privately owned. They are condos. The other half is what they rent out as hotel suites. Yes, there is only one restaurant, yes, there are only two bars. If you are looking for a beach front party hotel with a DJ and loud music and young kids doing shots of tequila, this is not the hotel for you!! The hotel is literally on the beach. You walk out of your room and you are about ten yards from the ocean. The view is spectacular! The food is wonderful. The wait staff are very friendly. When you arrive, tip the bartender well and you will have a friend for the entire trip! You have access to all of the same things that all of the other hotels have such as wave runners, parasailing, fishing, etc.. I highly recommend the Solymar if you are looking for a really low key laid back resort, this is the place for you! We have always had a great time and highly recommend them!! We love the Solymar!!" - Wes from Memphis, Tenn

"My family enjoyed the whole week we stayed at the Solymar. Much to our surprise, this hotel exceeded our expectations due partly to the bad reviews we read about online before we left. When we arrived we settled in and before the day was over, we were in love. As each passing day ended we started planning our next trip to Solymar. This hotel was calm and relaxed. We didnt have to worry about dress codes, or offending anyone with the casual beachside feeling. The food was terrific and we soon knew "favorite" dishes. And I surely dont want to forget to mention Julio, the poolside bartender. He made the best non alcoholic refreshments that my wife could dream of. Julio was full of life, stories, and so personable that we tipped him more than we would and ever had anyone, anywhere! It saddens me to think we may not be able to revisit Julio and the Solymar this year. We have been having trouble finding info on it online lately. If anyone has a family...Children or adults, or retired time to take in Mexico...Me and my family ask that you please give Solymar a try...But only if you want to relax!!!! Isn't that what a vacation is for?" - Mark from Batavia, Ohio

"I just got back last night and im very unhappy with my stay in Cancun Mexico. This is my 4th time in Mexico and I dont want to go back after this experience. First the hotel was suppose to be a 4 star and I wouldn't even rate it a 2-star. They have false advertising on their website. They state they have more than one bar and restaurant. They dont! The food was aweful! Our room didn't have an alarm clock of a telephone. We would ask for wake up calls and no one came and knocked on our door. I understand the hurricane affected this hotel and they have to work on it. But I was on vacation and I got woke up every morning at 7:15 am to someone pounding on the ceiling of my room. Why would you put us in a room with people working above us. I talked to the people up front and nothing was done. Then I talked to the manager and he was a jerk to me as well! No bell boy helped us when we were leaving. It seemed like no one wanted to help us and im very unhappy. I couldn't wait to get home. I paid too much money for this disgusting hotel! There were bugs in our room and the maid didn't even change our sheets. We had to ask for more towels everyday I had 3 people in my room and they'd leave one towel and question me when I asked for more. I hope no one goes through what I went through and I will do what I can to let everyone know to not stay there!" - Amber from Rockford, Illinois
