The Riviera Maya is absolutely the hottest vacation destination in Mexico. It comprises of the nine areas about 90 minutes south of Cancun. Few other vacation spots offer the array of hotels combined with such beautiful Caribbean ocean views. A unique aspect of the Riviera Maya are the huge hotel developments. The Iberostar hotel complex is over 300 acres which is comprised of five different hotels which have over 2,000 rooms in total. The RIU and Barcelo hotel complexes are similar in size.
The Riviera Maya is home to the best all-inclusive resorts in Mexico. Most of the hotels in the Riviera Maya are all-inclusive. All-Inclusive resorts are sort of like a cruise on land. They include your food, open bar, beverages and many activities along with the price of your room. Most have multiple dining options and often these are buffet style. Now, many of the five star all-inclusive resorts now have Al a Carte fine dining as well.
While the resorts are some of the finest in Mexico, the beaches are somewhat average. Many of the beaches are narrow and some have lots of seaweed and large rocks in the water making swimming less than optimum. But the beautiful all-inclusive resorts more than make up for the beaches.
Playa del Carmen is the center of the Riviera Maya. Playa is 75 miles south of the Cancun Airport and 40 miles north of Tulum. Playa del Carmen is the main city in the Riviera Maya area. This city boasts 125,000 residents. It is the restaurant, shopping and nightlife center for the resort area. The ferry to Cozumel departs from the Playa del Carmen harbor.
Puerto Morelos is 15 miles south of the Cancun Airport. This small sleepy Mexican village is home to a few restuarants and curios stores.
Playa Paraiso is the home of the deluxe Iberostar hotel complex.
Playacar is just south of Playa del Carmen.
Playacar is home to the extremely popular RIU hotel complex.
Xcaret is where Riviera Maya tourist go to do things. Xcaret is home to Mayan ruins, a theme park, water activities and more.
Tulum is the southern most area of Riviera Maya. This is the laid back area with small hotels, yoga retreats and Mayan Ruins.
