"The overall resort was beautiful and true to its pictures. The staff was friendly and the service was excellent! The view from our balcony was spectacular and the resort was exceptionally clean. The beach was disappointing in that there wasn't much room for laying out. When the tide was high, it would wash up most of the area. If you didn't get out first thing in the morning, you were not able to get a spot for soaking up the sun. The website is unclear regarding the type of food served. We were looking forward to excellent Mexican and seafood and we were very disappointed, the food was Americanized and not authentic. The website doesn't explain that you have to make reservations ahead of time to eat in the restaurants! That was very frustrating as you pay a lot of money to go to an all-inclusive and then they place restrictions on when you can eat at the specialty spots."

Remarks:
"We had issues at the resort. We had two ajoining rooms with our kids and the air-conditioning did not work right in our room. It was so hot the first night. I could not sleep and the pillows smelled like mildew. We contacted the front desk and they put us off until the next day. The mini fridge was dead and the motor to our air-conditioner was out. The maintinance man said the building was old and things were just worn out. He was supposed to retun the next morning and never did. It was miserably hot. If you opened the patio door the air turned off and every time the maid service came they would shut it off. They also would not replace the towels. The elevators had no air either nor did the hallways (or lights). I tried to find a contact to tell them these things when I returned and can find a customer service option nowhere. The food was good, but a lot of restrictions. The pictures look great, but everything is plaster and wood with faux painting to make it look like stone. The ceilings all dripped and had water damage. It really was a 3-star hotel in disguise. No room service either. Would not go back." - Jeanna from Dallas, Texas

"There was a large group of us that stayed at the Riu Cancun for my 35th Birthday. I was not impressed. I have stayed at other Riu's that were much better! The staff at the front desk weren't friendly or helpful. The second day that we were there, I noticed that a couple of my shirts had disappeared and my brand new lotion that was sitting in my suitcase had been opened and used. When I approached the front desk about the situation, they sent one of their "Security guards" up to my room to go through my suitcases to apparently see if I was lying?? A couple days go by and nothing. I was finally fed up and went to talk to the main manager. She said, let me look into this and get back to you. Another day went by and she said that she found my shirts and that the maid said that they were actually mixed up with the sheets when she changed them. I then explained that my clothes were no where near the bed and that still didn't explain the whole lotion thing. I was happy to get my shirts back and left it alone. The rest of the trip, I only let them clean my room when I was in there to make sure nothing was taken. Come to find out after we all got home...I was missing hair accessories, one of my husbands shirts was gone and my fathers pocket knife was gone. I will never stay there again!" - Amber from Salt Lake City, Utah

"After reading so many negative reviews I was nervous to say the least. However when we arrived we were pleasantly surprised. The staff was more than friendly and accommodating. Our room was ready before 12pm ( a surprise we were not expecting). The room was lovley and stocked appropriately. Food ... a wide array for even the pickiest eater. The only complaint I may have is the bed was hard and the pillows were flat. The rooms also need additional electrical outlets. Other than that I would go again without question." - Sharonne from New York City, N.Y.

"Heaven? Almost......! I am amazed at the negative reviews. What on Earth are people thinking or expecting that the Riu Cancun did not provide. There was a kind and attentive staff, from check-in clerks to bell boys to house keepers. They provided clean and comfortable surroundings. From the front-desk to the restaurants, to the outside ground, the pools and rooms, all spotless. We always felt safe and secure. The food was excellent; the Don Juan Buffet was great for breakfast and lunch and dinner and excellent service was the theme of the day. There was good entertainment, beautiful pools, effort free check-in and service second to none. The children's program was amazing; pool side activities were fun and inviting and the evening shows were entertaining. Not Vegas, but very well done. Special thanks to the activities staff; Latcho, Fernando, Sara, and Froggy who worked pool side daily and during the evening shows to keep us laughing and entertained all week. Thanks too, to the hard working ground keepers and cleaning staff and table servers who never stopped working and with a smile to keep the place spotless and everyone well served. Never once did I feel as they expected a tip but we did give tips because they earned it. And every time they were very gracious in receiving the gift. There are lot of shopping, restaurants and cool bars within walking distance of the hotel. Have I described Heaven? Of course not, there are flaws in everything, but not many at the Riu Cancun. One of the highlights of the trip was meeting so many wonderful people from countries around the world. Cancun is truly a world destination. Will we go back? Tomorrow if we could. Take my word for it, go-relax!. Enjoy..and have the time of your life. The negative reviews, I don't get it. But I guess you can't satisfy everyone. Even in Heaven. Ha! Enjoy the Riu Cancun. We sure did!!" - Michael from Cincinnati, Ohio

"We went the week of New Years. We had never been to Mexico before.. it was amazing! The hotel was perfect. It was close to Starbucks and shopping. The clubs were right down the street from the hotel too. The only complaint I have is the fact that you have to get up early (6am) to get a spot at the pool. People start putting their towels on the chairs at the crack of dawn. Other than that.. it was truly the best vacation weve taken!" - P.J. from Boston, Massachusetts

We loved the beach with the rocks. It was so beautiful and compared to the east side of Cancun's beach... WOW! We loved the fact to that there was a professional photographer! From the time we walked in the door we were greeted so warmly. The food was fantastic! Our room was perfect and so was the maid service! The pools were neat and clean! And like I said already, we can't wait til next year to return!" - Bruce from Mitchell, South Dakota

"The hotel is nice and massive. The food is very good and abundant, but that is where it ends. A few of people arrived at 12pm and the room wasn't ready they said come back in 1 hour and we all did. After 3 hours miraculously everybody's room was ready at the same time and then you are on your own to find your room. I didn't see a bellboy and neither did anyone else. There is no room service and no coffee pot in the rooms. You are very much on your own there. The pool service at the pool was terrible and worse on the beach and the bartenders weren't very friendly. Don't believe the pictures of the beach you see online, it looks nothing like that. There are better resorts in Cancun that will pamper you more, but if you don't mind doing things for yourself it is a nice place. Another thing is the sun goes behind the tallest building around 2:00 which casts shade on the pools. I hope this helps you with your choice of resorts." - Randall from Woodruff, Illinois

"This hotel has smelly pillows and tired rooms. The beach is small, rocky and lots of broken glass on it. The pools were not very clean except on 2 days. The food and servers were fantastic and we had a ball because we were a wedding group of 38 people. The bar tenders were fantastic as well but the hotel was not a 4 or 5 star hotel. The charge for this hotel was that of a five star and they promote a 5-star but this hotel was not a 5-star hotel. We paid almost $1600.00 in July for a hotel that should be a 3-star dressed up as a 5. Very dirty pools. Rooms and pillows smell, and are mediocre at best. I would not recommend this hotel even though we had a blast. We were a group of 38 people celebrating a wedding so we made th most of it. If the bride and groom had not suggested and selcted this place I would have left it. I think clean pools and pillows should be mandatory regardless of the star rating." - Deborah from Guelph, Ontario

"The dining staff, pool staff, entertainment staff was wonderful. The food was fantastic. The front desk staff was not friendly at all and very helpful when you need to speak to them about your room. As far as the room, they were very damp, moldy, and very cold. The pillows we had were hard as rock and the bathrooms were very out of date. We were very unhappy with the rooms I felt like I was sleeping in a basement! On one morning we woke up to a pool of water in our room from a broken toilet. The water was leaking from the bottom and everything was soaked. I will return to Cancun, but I will stay at another hotel. You could not pay me to stay there for free." - Linda from Clinton, New Jersey

"The hotel is 2 stars at best. The air conditioning worked maybe 30% of the time. The lobby, elevators and restaurants were so hot, it was nearly unbearable. The hotel turns off the lights at night!!! I have never experienced such a thing. Upon departure, I had to walk down a long dark hallway to a lobby, only to get in a hot and dark elevator. The lobby was a ghost town, there was no staff and no lights. The air at 5:00am was not on and I waited outside alone until my shuttle arrived. The spa is the only thing that the RIU seems to have going for them!! " - C from Detroit, Michigan

"The grounds of the hotel are immaculate. The pools were wonderful. I think there were four of them. The ocean frontage was great. I had heard concerns over the rocks, but didn't find them to be a problem. The food...I'm not really one for buffets. Everyday the food was the same at the buffets. Some (not all) didn't look really appealing, although no one got sick during our stay there. The Japanese restaurant was really a nice change and I'd really recommend that you try it out. The Room...had an awful smell the first night. The shower water smelled like rotten eggs. We talked to the front desk and they did send someone to look at the problem within an hour. After a day the room smell seemed to disappear. The beds were hard and the linens and towels were old. The TV was small and old as well. Can you believe they still use keys for the doors and safe? The rooms really need to be upgraded to the same level as the grounds!!!! The lobby area is really outdated and the furniture there is old as well. Staff at the restaurants, pools and bars were very friendly." - Linda from Winnipeg, Canada

Eerything was awesome and beautiful from 15th floor to the middle of the ocean where I did para-sailing for first time in my life (I always dreaming to do that) yes finally I did it and also snorkeling but unfortunately after 10min. I got phobic and I couldn't continue, but I recommend to my friends, family and everybody to go and see Cancun and especially Riu Cancun with all and best entertainment for one years old to 100 years old everybody had fun at any time of day with does young and full energy, nice looking kids kept every body busy without to fill go out from that hotel. The only thing I would like to suggest them to use better detergent and better quality for sheets. When you go to sleep you can smell better so you don't have to spray perfume before go to bed. (that was what I did for 5 nights). I wish for everybody who goes vacation can enjoy as much as they can. Bon voyage." - Adrina from Glendale, California

Staff was friendly and very accessable. What can I say about the food.........except fabulous!. Something for everyone, at any time of the day. Nothing like having your breakfast outside on a shaded veranda overlooking the beach and pool. The beach is relatively small but very well kept and clean. More than enough lounge chairs for everyone at the beach and the pool. And the entertainment...... WOW. The kids on the entertainment staff made our stay so much fun. From the sheduled activities you could sign up for to the impromtue fun and games in the pool, and lets not forget the nightly shows. These kids are a huge asset to the resort. You felt as though you got to know them all by the end of your stay........always friendly, always smiling. Would I recommend it?? All I can say is we have already made plans to return next year. :-)." - M. from Port Washington, Wisconsin
