"Loved the view." - Tanya from St. Louis, Missouri
Remarks:
"When we first arrived at the hotel, the front desk person was not familiar with procedure and upgrades. We had to wait for someone with more experience to help us. The food was not good. Very disapointing since we stayed in other Iborostar resorts and the food was excellent. The main buffet was closed and to get a reservation we had to be put on a cancellation list or wait 2-2 days to get into restaurant. The best place to eat was the Japanese. Don't eat any where else. In addition, when our room was cleaned, one of my wraps disappeared. I called the customer service and they told me that they will speak with the person who cleaned our room and they will get back to me. Never heard back. Its not the piece of clothing, it was the principal of the thing that I could not trust their staff to come into our room. When we were checking-out, I asked the front desk about this issue. I was told that I had to fill out mega forms for them to do an investigation. Thanks for nothing! We were ready to get on the bus and I just dropped the whole thing. So, if you are going to stay in this resort, don't bring nice things with you and make sure you lock your important things in the safe. Obviously, the cleaning staff cannot be trusted. Learn my lesson - never will go back there again." - Tanya from St. Louis, Missouri

"We were very, very disappointed! The food was aweful- the first night we went to the Mexican restaurant and could not eat anything. I am not a fussy eater, but this meal was the worst I have ever had. I ordered beef tacos and got three tortillas laid flat with hard grizzly meat that looked like dog food with no sauce or anything else. The lobby and grounds were nice, but our room was not nice at all. Not a 5-star. I ended up with bed-bug bites. Our lamp shades were broken and horribly stained and our shower had no water pressure. People were just ok- some better than others- more than once we would ask a question and they would give us the wrong answer- I believe they tried, but just weren't trained well. The beach was nice, but this is NOT a 5-star. Possibly at one time, but it needs a lot of work. We stayed last year, not too far away, and we could not say enough good things about the resort. Do not waste your money on this resort- stay elsewhere." - Peggy from Jamestown, New York

"From the front desk to the servers, they are all excellent, Naomi at the desk is friendly and very helpfull, bellman like Hector is worth a mention, hostess like Ulander at the italian restaurant made us felt warm and welcome. The butler and concierge were so helpful that made our stay very pleasant. Victor and Rene are stars of iberostar.

But we have a very unsatisfying and avoidable experience at the golf course if the young green marshal use his simple logic and tiny bit of patience. On March 04, my wife and myself had a tee time of 8:00 am. We were teamed up with a young couple, both are lawyers from Chicago. They were guests at Secret Resort. The lady is a fairly new golfer. During the first 6 holes the young marshal with trimmed beard, come and checked on us couple times. By the time we have finished the 7th holes, the marshal told us to skip the 8th and 9th holes and start at 10th hole. He said we are slow, so we proceed. When we arrived at 10th hole, there was group of foursome waiting to tee off. So we take our time go to washroom and have some refreshments and sandwishes from the wagon. When we start to tee off at this time at the 10th hole. we have 3 groups golfers, we are at the tee box and a group of twosome in the midst of the fairway and a foursome at green putting. After all we are not that slow at all. If we were too slow, we would not have wait that long at the 10th hole. The fun started when finished our 18th holes and we are suppose to play out 8th and 9th holes. This time we have to cut in and let four groups of golfer pass us and then start from 6th and 7th again. The whole game took about 6 hours or more. That night back in the hotel room #7149, we were sick, vomiting. I guess it was too much sun, maybe a case of sun stroke. Next day at the breakfast the group of golfers that was behind us from 1st to the 7th holes asked where we have disappeared too, and they said they didn't have to wait at all. The question is; The marshal harrasing us because we didn't feel like tipping him, or he did not realized that we were not PGA golf profesionals. What a way to ruin a great holiday! I am quite should the young lawyer couple wouldn't book another vacation at Iberostar. What you think?" - William from Prince George, British Columbia, Canada

"Iberostar Del Mar: 6 day stay. The specialty restaurants are restricted (2 for 6 days, 3 for 7 days...) the rest of the time you go to the buffet. The Brazilian restaurant had been moved down to the beach area (bugs) and was hot and not satisfactory at all. Meat not well prepared. I'd skip Brazilian. Our other choice was Mediterranean which was OK. The buffets have vast selections and quantities, but are certainly not gourmet. Breads are more European style than American. I was very disappointed to not find the delicious Mexican breads we can get in San Antonio. Room was fine, fairly ordinary with a hard bed. Pools were good except in the afternoons when the swim-up bar areas became rowdy. Their waterfall which is beautiful, was not on for 2 whole days??? Beach is good, sand beautiful. Landscaping was outstanding and almost the best part of the resort. Mixed drinks probably skimpy on alcohol. Large and extended families seem to stay there. We'd probably stay one less day and upgrade to the Maya next time." - Bernice from San Antonio, Texas

"Just returned from 7 night stay at the Paraiso Del Mar. We went with family to celebrate our 40th. We had 6 rooms booked. To be fair the weather was poor at best (not the hotel fault). Six days of cloudy with partial rain. Two & 1/2 days of partial Sun. This only amplified any minor or major shortfall we encountered. With a hotel of this size geared almost 100% on the Sun we encountered days of TV, hanging out in the open lobbys, repetitive buffet, warped billiard tables, overpriced ($8.00) playing cards (not supplied), shopping and shopping and shopping while running in and out of the rain clouds. The beach was exclusively red flagged during the entire week (red flag = swimming not recommended). No parasailing (lightening and wind), no skidoo, no catamaran rentals or even the free ones, waves too high to get out, no scuba or snorkel because the water was too rough. Only horseshoes on the beach or quad in the mosquito jungle trails. Two hours escorted $65.00 per person. Well, there was always shopping to fill the time.

In all fairness the hotel was magnificent, clean, well decorated and very pleasant to be in. The wait staff was fantastic. Housekeeping was very responsive. Minor problems (ceiling fan broken) (ants in our room) were attended to immediately. Room air conditioning was adequate, kept at lowest 21 deg.C. barely kept up with ambient temperature. Room was a good size with large walk in shower. King size firm bedding was very good. Mini bar was always filled (included), towels were amply supplied, lots of bottled drinking water included even jug water for coffee in room. Hair dryer, iron and iron board included, room safe. We were very satisfied with the room. US$ goes a long way in extras, I know tipping is included, but hand out a 5 or 10 when you get there to housekeeping, and they can't do enough for you. Especially housekeeping! Always tip when checking in.

Now the downside.... there are 5 Iberostar properties all in the same area. Del Mar and Beach are the budget properties, and they go up from there to the Grand at the top. THIS GOES FOR THE FOOD TOO.... Budget gets budget meals. If you are OK with huge buffets of just ok food this is the one for you. There are three buffets offering Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner and late night. Breakfast included assorted meats, eggs anyway you could imagine (fresh), pancakes, waffles, cheeses, always lots of fresh fruit, dry cereals and hot cereals, and more stuff than I could put here. Lunch and dinner included hot meat and fish dishes, cold salads, hot and cold mussels, specials of the day might be pasta night, fish night, beef night, etc... Just OK food not great, just ok.... You can swap hotels down for food, you can't swap meals up! If you are at the Grand you are king of the hill. We were escorted out of the Lindo because we went up one grade. Lindo people attended our pool which was bigger than theirs. Snack bars (beach side and pool side) included pork hot dogs and stale buns, mystery meat burgers and stale buns, brat sausages on stale buns, always nachos and watered down cheese whiz, soggy corn on the cob. You are on your own for snaks. Drinks are abundant beach side, pool side, everywhere you go there is frozen drinks etc.... Free drinks, if you intend on getting drunk don't waste your time on the free fru/fru drinks, Pina colada, chunky monkey, mud slide.... stay with straight and mixed alcohol drinks (margareta, martini, vodka neet etc..) and tequila slammers. These were the only honest drinks served. The rest were empty calories. I often wondered if there were any alcohol in the frozen drinks. Do a 1/2 dozen slammers, now your doing something. I guess for free (included) they can call it what they want. Overall I could have found a better price value for dollars spent. Would I go back? probably not. I spent $5421.00 for jan 10 to the 17th 2009, for 1 double and a single for my daughter. Not including airfare ($1700) for 3 from NY. I guess it is back to cruiseing for me. Celebrity Cruise Lines Rule." - Jerry from Northern New Jersey, N.J.

"I've stayed at several places in this area. The Iberostar was my least favorite. The food was not all that great in comparison and the bed was hard as a brick. We had a view of the pool but most people didn't have any view. It advertised an adult pool but there were children all over the tiny area of the large pool designated for adults. Lots of children in the swim up bar areas as well." - Barb from Urbana, Illinois

The view of the ocean from the pool was stunning we took 200 pics of your hotel. The restaurants were super. Not a bad meal once. The service of the staff was excellent. I enjoyed the choices of food from your buffet to the exotic sit-down reservation restaurants. The landscaping and flowers of your hotel was beautiful both during the day and the evening. I recommend this hotel to everyone I know. We'll be back, but Brazil, Greece and Spain is also on our list. Thanks for everything Muy Bien y Adios Amigos." - Marlena from Milford, Pennsylvania

The grounds were beautiful along with the wonderful pools and breathtaking beach. The food was better than we expected too. The staff was more than helpful and provided us with whatever we needed. They even brought us a foam mattress cover when we conveyed that our bed was too hard. Couldn't of had a better experience. Look forward to more Iberostar vacations." - Gene & Jeannie from Chicago, Illinois

"Me and my family just got back from a 5 day vacation yesterday. We have went to the Grand Palladium 2 years in a row and wanted to try something new so we went to the Iberostar Del Mar. I didnt want to leave.....in fact no one wanted to! We had 8 people on the trip. The pool was never ending. It was one big pool and then a little one. They always have pool games at 12:00pm. The beach is wonderful. Its nice and relaxing and the water is beautiful! It is so clear. The food was okay. They had a 24hr snack bar.and like 2 buffets. We went to two fancy resturaunts but the one was the Steak House and that was in side the snack bar. The other one was the Japenesse resturaunt. That was great. They cook infont of you and u site with like 2 other familys. The one thing we didnt really likes was around 5:00 u would go to get a drink and the swim up bar would be closed. So we would go to the snack bars and they would be closed so we would have to walk all the way to the lobby just for a drink. Their entertainment is wonderful. they have a group called Star Friends and everyday they do pool games and dance lessons. They do these two songs to dance two 2 times a day then again that night at the show. You will go around singing both of them all day! we did! They have a game on stage, then they play games all day and if u win they call your name and u go on stage and get a hat, shirt, and award, then they do a show, then they do both dances then they have a dance party and the star friends ask u to dance with them. This one girl who does darts was sooo nice and she loved us and she kept asking my dad to dance, and this guy who i thought was cute likes my sister and her husband so he danced with us a lot. But they r so friendly and nice. So I would say to go to the Iberostar Del Mar for your next vacation!" - Amber from Mt. Ephraim, New Jersey
