Here's our Barcelo Maya Palace Resort Review

The Barcelo Maya Palace Resort is one of the most popular all-inclusive resorts on Playa del Carmen. It is a fabulous Mayan style beach resort, built along a mile long stretch of beautiful white sand beach. Lounge by one of the three large pools, or by the beach under one of the many palm trees. The Barcelo Maya Palace Resort is a fine quality all-inclusive Cancun resort.

"Long story short...second time here. It has declined since our first visit. Beds hard, rooms moldy, AC not cold enough, staff lies and charges you for Club Premium then say they are overbooked (but the guy checking in next to us just yelled his way into getting it!). Managers non existent and hide away from problems. Spring break crowd not controlled, restaurants always booked but is half empty all the time? Charge for wi-fi is crazy! Feels like no one cares about you...unless you tip them. Lied to over and over again (si, we bring you more towels, si, you can have this for free...si, si, si...see? You are lying again!) The beach is amazing though and cleaning staff friendly (although inconsistent). Bottom line—take all reviews into consideration, not just the good or not just the bad. Do your homework and get everything in writing before hand. You can't please everyone all the time but while staying this time, we encountered many, many people with issues this trip." - Heidi from Canada

Remarks:
"The Barcelo Maya Palace (the most expensive of the 5 contiguous resorts) is an absolutely beautiful hotel and beach, so my husband and I were taken back by the rudeness of the front desk personnel when we arrived. Although you are greeted with a glass of champagne while waiting to checkin in, the person behind the counter (including the manager) made us feel that we were in an assembly line. We were given a room with two double beds (not even queen) although we had reserved a king. When we called the front desk they told us the hotel was booked and had nothing available. I asked that they call us the next day if a room becomes available and they agreed. We heard nothing. We met with the Traffi-Tours that morning and explained our frustration and they jumped to action and immediately found us a room with a king size bed. When we arrived in the room we were shocked to find this room was in the smoking section of the resort even though we had specified non-smoking. We called down again and they said they did not have any other rooms and again it sounded as they could care less. That evening we met a group of women on the veranda who booked their reservations at the Beach (the cheapest resort) but because the Beach was overbooked they were upgraded to the Palace. Yes, they had our queen size beds. So the people from the overbooked cheaper resort were given our rooms and we, who paid for the more expensive resort, were downgraded to double beds! And, they could have cared less. Not the kind of customer service we paid for. When we moved our clothes to the new room, I noticed that one of the two pairs of slacks my husband brought were missing. We had little to no assistance from the hotel management in finding them but we did notice the man who restocked our bar was my husbands size. The pants were never located. The first room we were in had a broken toilet seat which they fixed immediately when we called. However, it broke again before we moved to the other room. The soap dispenser was broken and the drain stopped up on us. The second room was either freezing or hot. It should be part of check-in procedure to instruct you to close the patio door to turn on the air. However on the last night the air was so cold we had to use extra blankets to keep warm. Maintenance was very timely every time we called, but were not able to fix everything adequately. The room was still cold but not as bad. For a resort of this quality, I would have expected more. The beds were rather hard, the wine was atrocious, there was no information on beach activities which we just happened to stumble upon; the people in the business office (computer room) were also very rude. Internet access was quite expensive. Reservations at the restaurants were hard to get even though they were never ever full. Guests were allowed to put their towels on the chairs at the pool and leave them all day even though they were not occupying them. And finally, the elevators electricity shut down with us and another couple in it. We had to pull open the doors to escape. On the positive side, facilities were extremely clean and beautiful, the food and selection was very good and the service personnel who cleaned your room, waited on in the dining areas, found you a cab, were all wonderfully nice. Too bad a few at the front desk spoiled what could have been an exquisite experience." - Mercy from Omaha, Nebraska
