"Serious lack of security. We (myself, husband, two grandchildren) stayed at the Allego Playacar (12/9/09 - 12/15/09). We booked two adjoining rooms. The place was lacking in many areas (rooms smelled, little/no air conditioning, and extremely small beach) but what concerned us most was the lack of security. On our second night, around 11:20 p.m., while I was sleeping with my granddaughter, a drunken man used his key card, entered our room and started to argue "what are you doing in my room?" I screamed, tried to call security, and found out the phone did not work. The door between our rooms had swung shut, so my husband could not come to help. After I had called security (from his phone) I also discovered that neither of the rooms windows would lock (they could easily be slid open from the outside). I and my granddaughter were upset and frightened. We walked up to the lobby and requested that the locks be reset, and the windows locked. The night manager, Manuel, took care of our request, but the general attitude was that it was no big deal. No one else inquired as to what had happened. We stayed the week, but my granddaughter had a hard time sleeping. The phone in our room was never fixed. We should have doubled locked the doors (and certainly did thereafter) but with two kids running from room to room, this was overlooked. We travel quite often, and have stayed in many different hotels, and I have never had an experience quite like this. " - Thereaa from Boston, Massachusetts

"This was my third visit to Allegro Playacar and I plan to return again. Firstly, the staff is incredible. The friendliness and professionalism is unbeatable. The food is quite good (sure, if you stay for 2 weeks you may find some dishes repetitive) The nice thing is that you can always find something to eat; healthy or not - you choose. The rooms are spacious enough for a couple. Yes, there is a hint of a musty odor in the rooms, but what do you expect in such a rustic and traditional complex sitting right on the beach in full access of ocean humidity. Come on! There are worse things in life! The grounds and vegetation are impeccable. The proximity to Playa del Carmen city center is perfect. You can walk in daily or take a cab. The activities and tour knowledge is great. You could never find yourself bored in this resort. The option of the action pool vs. the relax pool is nice. All in all, Allegro Playacar is a very decent resort for what you pay. Its not 5 star but doesn't pretend to be either. Suitable for families, couples, old and young. The only negative point is the beach which was destroyed during huricane Katrina - it will take some time for the beach access to be restored to what it once was. But, within 5 minutes walk either left or right you can access nice beaches with easy access." - Paula from Basel, Switzerland

"The hotel was located about 10 minutes from Playa Del Carmen. The staff was absolutely amazing! Jose Luis and Luigi were fantabulous! They were constantly getting people involved with day activities, making sure everyone was having fun. They made good relationships with the people staying there and organized and chaperoned late night activites (local bars, clubs). Luis and Luigi definitely made our trip unforgettable!" - Cole from Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada

"The cost of the trip was great! But the rooms were horrible. They are huts. I need a cement ceiling, not hay! The room smelled of mildew and was always wet. I lived outside because I didnt want to be in the room. I never felt clean even after taking a shower. The beds were super hard. I will definitely return to Mexcio, but will not stay at the Occidental Allegro Playa Del Carmen." - Tracy from Dallas, Texas

"We stayed at the Allegro last April. The reviews have all stated that this hotel was reconstructed last February and this is not true. It was minimally fixed and the grounds were nice but there was not much for beach. We decided to return at the end of January as we were pleased with the staff and the food. Within the last two weeks we have been notified of severe beach erosion and the pool is cracked. There is NO BEACH access at this time. Last year we could have gone south to the next beach area. now this is impossible! I thought that the Occidental chain of hotels would have fixed the beach area in the last year and put a little more effort into post hurricane fix-ups!!" - Mary Ellen, from St. Paul, Minnesota
